The continental margin of southern South Africa exhibits an array of emergent marginal marine sediments permitting the reconstruction of long-term eustatic sea-level changes. We report a suite of optical luminescence ages and supplementary amino acid racemization data, which provide paleosea-level index points for three sites on this coastline. Deposits in the Swartvlei and Groot Brak estuaries display tidal inlet facies overlain by shoreface or eolian facies. Contemporary facies relations suggest a probable high stand 6.0-8.5 m above modern sea level (amsl). At Cape Agulhas, evidence of a past sea-level high stand comprises a gravel beach (ca. 3.8 m amsl) and an overlying sandy shoreface facies (up to 7.5 m amsl). OSL ages between 138±7 ka and 118±7 ka confirm a last interglacial age for all marginal marine facies. The high stand was followed by a sea-level regression that was associated with the accumulation of eolian dunes dating to between 122±7 ka and 113±6 ka. These data provide the first rigorous numerical age constraints for last interglacial sea-level fluctuations in this region, revealing the timing and elevation of the last interglacial high stand to broadly mirror a number of other far-field locations.

Summary
Introduction
The past five years have seen a dramatic rise in the number of niche switch technologies being reported in the open literature. These include, but are not limited to, the general areas of latching, multiway and high-power. These niche technologies are covered within the same dedicated chapter, because of the synergy found between them. It should be of no surprise that there is a large overlap between these technologies; with latches being used in both multiway and high-power switches and the need for implementing high-power multiway switches.
Latching switches
For some applications, switches are required that are non-volatile and able to remain in any state after the source of actuation energy has been removed. For example, in certain safety-critical applications it is essential for the state of the system to be preserved in the event of a power failure. In other systems, for example, in portable electronic devices, remote sensors and unmanned aerial (or air or aircraft) vehicles (UAVs) or systems (UASs), the available power is limited and non-volatile switches are attractive because they require zero holding power, regardless of their state.

This paper describes two aspects of research aimed at harnessing the triplet energy generated in electron-hole recombination in polymer electroluminescent devices. The purpose is to design solution-processible phosphorescent organometallic triplet emitters and to design high triplet energy polymer hosts that can transfer triplet energy to the phosphorescent guests. The method employed Suzuki cross coupling reactions to incorporate either phosphorescent cores or high energy triplet monomers covalently into polymer hosts to evaluate their optoelectronic properties. The results showed (i) efficient energy transfer from polyfluorene hosts to red phosphorescent guests and (ii) that pyridine and carbazole monomers could raise triplet energies of hosts. It is concluded that these approaches offer promise in the design of solution processible electrophosphorescent materials for red and green light emitting devices.

Surface characteristics including wettability, thickness and adhesive potential of the pedal mucus produced by Patella vulgata and Littorina littorea were measured, to determine their effects on the settlement of marine organisms. The pedal mucus produced by P. vulgata was less wettable than that produced by L. littorea. For organisms that prefer to settle on hydrophobic substrata the pedal mucus produced by P. vulgata would be their preferred settlement site. The pedal mucus produced by stationary P. vulgata was thicker (mean thickness±SE=0·37±0·004 mm) than the pedal mucus produced by mobile P. vulgata and/or that produced by L. littorea, neither of which differed in their thickness (mean thickness±SE =0·10±0·01 mm). The pedal mucus produced by P. vulgata had a greater adhesive potential (mean force of adhesion for the size range of mimics examined=3715–5380 Nm2) than the pedal mucus produced by L. littorea (mean force of adhesion for the size range of mimics examined=2846–3361 Nm2). Comparison of the adhesive potential of the pedal mucuses with a pedal mucus analogue, silicon grease, suggests that the pedal mucuses function as a Stefan (1874) adhesive when adhering organisms.
